Harry Potter is a series of fantastic adventures, written by British author J.K. Rowling. Since the launch of the first volume, Harry Potter and thePhilosopher's Stone in 1997, the books have gained immense popularity and commercial success worldwide, and resulted in films, video games and many other items.
Worldwide, the Harry Potter series has sold 450 million copies (up to July2011), in 67 languages.
The book series was the best-selling Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone with about 120 million copies sold. Thanks to the great success of the books, Rowling has become the richest woman in the history of literature. The books are published by Editora Rocco in Brazil andEditorial Presence in Portugal.
Much of the narrative takes place in the School of Witchcraft and WizardryHogwarts, and focuses on the conflict between Harry Potter and the dark wizard Lord Voldemort. At the same time, books on themes of friendship,ambition, choice, prejudice, courage, growth, moral responsibility and the complexities of life and death, and place in a magical world with their own stories, people, culture and societies.
All seven planned books have been published. The seventh, called HarryPotter and the Deathly Hallows, was released in the U.S. on July 21, 2007, and Brazil and Portugal on 10 November and 16 November respectively.
The seven books have resulted in eight blockbuster movies with the latest, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows being split into two parts, one released on November 19, 2010, and another on July 15, 2011.
